October 14, 2011: Specialists Receive Equitable Remuneration for NP Referral

We are pleased to announce that all referrals to physician specialists by Nurse Practitioners will generate equal remuneration starting immediately.  The Saskatchewan Gazette announced on Sept. 16, 2011 that The Saskatchewan Medical Care Insurance Payment Amendment Regulations, 2011 were amended to include registered nurses who are entitled pursuant to The Registered Nurses Act, 1988 Amended 2003 to practice in the nurse practitioner category”.

Nurse practitioners (NP)s must include their NP ID number (billing number) on the referral letter to be used by the specialist for bill processing purposes.  Some NPs may not have a billing number.  To address this, SANP will work with the Ministry of Health to create and distribute billing numbers for all NP providers.  Further information about this change will be shared as it evolves.  Additional information will also be provided through SRNA email/news bulletin to nurses and to physicians through Medical Services Branch newsletters.

NPs are encouraged to use the Saskatchewan's online Specialist Directory to search for specialists.  The resource recently added a search engine to make it easier to find current information about surgical specialists and surgical wait times in Saskatchewan.   The link is http://specialists.health.gov.sk.ca/. Data on the site is planned to be updated weekly.
