Outstanding Accomplishments of Nurse Practitioner Leaders Celebrated

The first annual Heather Keith Leadership Award was bestowed upon Ms. Mikki Millar, Nurse Practitioner at an awards reception sponsored by Saskatchewan Association of Nurse Practitioners (SANP) on May 13, 2011.  Mikki Millar RN(NP) earned this honour by demonstrating excellence in leadership in nursing and commitment to community through volunteer work, including mentoring, community empowerment, and innovation as a change agent.

Nominated by her peers, they raved, “Over the past five years Mikki has worked tenaciously in the Cypress Hills Region and the communities of Leader and Eatonia, playing an active role in initiating changes that further the health of citizens and colleagues, interdisciplinary colleagues, and friends. She is known for her friendly, outgoing personality, her willingness to advocate for others, and for the improvements to the health of the people she serves in these communities.”

The evening celebrating leadership included stakeholders from Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities, Honourable Don McMorris Minister of Health and his wife Cindy; and Lynn Digney Davis, Provincial Chief Nursing Officer. Also present were healthcare managers, nurse practitioners from the entire province and Mikki's proud family and friends. Three health regions made presentations demonstrating some of the health promotion and protection work accomplished by Nurse Practitioners leaders within their respective practices. Mr.  McMorris commented, “I am impressed how nurse practitioners are always about the health of the people, families and communities, and the collaboration needed to achieve this.”

Mikki's practice uses innovation and advanced nursing practice knowledge and skill to meet the health needs of her communities in sustainable ways that put patients first. Congratulations to Ms. Mikki Millar RN(NP), a shining example of excellence in nursing leadership.
